Helke First Graders to Experience Tower Garden

Vandalia-Butler City Schools

Helke first graders are going to find out what it’s like to grow their own food as teacher Emily Boggs develops the school’s first Tower Garden.  Set up on the garden began Monday, Jan. 4.

Boggs’ students will participate in all elements from planting seeds, to monitoring PH levels to pruning, picking and eating.

The project offers a variety of learning opportunities from math to language arts.  Students will measure and collect data, writing about their observations.  They’ll also have the chance to do fun, free writing about topics including new foods to which they will be exposed.

Boggs plans to do a lot of taste testing and even develop easy recipes for the kids to make.  At the end of the school year, the garden’s bounty will be shared with parents and staff.  Boggs hopes to start a new garden each school year
